Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is the biggest emirate within the UAR. It holds more than 80% of its land. The city by the same name is its capital as well as that of the whole of the United Arab Emirates. It is located on an island less than 250 metres away from the mainland, connected to it by two bridges (a third on is currently under construction). The history of Abu Dhabi must be considered remarkable if compared with European standards. In 1958, it was still nothing but a small camel-trading town, mostly consisting of mud huts (which really are very appropriate, given its dry desert climate). Then, in 1958, oil was found in the emirate, and its history really began - with Abu Dhabi's first asphalt road being completed in 1961.
But look at Abu Dhabi now! It is a dazzling business metropolis, with a population of 945,268. So, although its number of inhabitants hasn't surpassed a million YET!, its skyline easily does rival that of Manhatten already. It is now one of the world's most modern cities! They say that Rome wasn't built in a day - but when thinking of Abu Dhabi, one might almost want to question this ancient proverb. It is true that it was originally "made" by oil, but now it is an international business hot-spot, also huge on the service sector. It has a large expat community from around the world who like to live and work in Abu Dhabi. It offers housing at all luxury levels, creative, post-modern architecture, and smart ecological awareness in construction.
When speaking about going green, one especially has to mention the city of "Zero Carbon" Masdar, which, as a whole, is currently under construction 17 km away from Abu Dhabi City. Masdar has already set new standards in tems of renewable resourses. It will entirely be operated on solar energy. The power plant is at present being built by German engeneers from the company of Conergy. Masdar will be a city for living and working. The finest architects in the world are contributing to it, opening new horizons in aesthetic as well as in technological ways.
Fortunately for Abu Dhabi, the 2008 financial crisis only had a small effect on the emirate's economy. One reason for this are its oil reserves - and its enormous wealth, which appears to be crisis resistent in a very healthy way. Its real estate market is still just as vibrant as before, though the prices have fallen. Which clearly means that the time to buy is right now!
