Dubai
Dubai is one of the seven member states within the country called the United Arab Emirates. It has 2.2 million inhabitants and its area is more than 4000 square km big (for comparison: The country of Luxembourg has 2500 square km). Since the 90's and especially since the beginning of this millennium, Dubai, which before was hardly known to the Western public, has become an iconic and extremely trendy travelling and investment destination.
Dubai is a city unique in the world. Regarding its development, there has never been a quicker and more powerful one in world history. In the decade between 1995 and 2005 Dubai doubled its population.
The financial crisis of the autumn of 2008 had a great effect on Dubai. Its real estate prices went down by almost 40%. This led to many people - especially poor migrant workers - having to leave Dubai. In April of 2009 things started looking up for the Emirate. Especially through ecomic reforms, market liberalization, and smart crisis management, the government has succeeded in stopping the recession. Now real estate prices are still much lower than during the boom years. Therefor, many experts believe that the time to invest is now - for the situation indeed looks highly favourable. After all, Dubai's incredible infrastructure is unrivaled in the world. And of course, Dubai is a major part of the mighty United Arab Emirates, with its gigantic oil resserves.
The UAE is a federal country, formed out of seven emirates in 1971. Abu Dhabi is the largest of them, holding more than 80% of the countrie's area. (Altogether, the UAE's territory - 83 thousand square km - is slightly bigger than that of the Czech Republic, while its population is just over 4.5 million, the majority of whom live clustered in the coastal areas while the South mostly consists of oil-rich desert-land.) Dubai is the second biggest member state, although it is also the UAE's largest city - despite the fact that Abu Dhabi City is the federal state's capital. The UAE is a constitutional monarchy. Due to its favourable climate, its long golf coast with beautiful sand beaches, and its extraordinary wealth, it is the perfect place for upscale tourism.
