Bur Dubai
Bur Dubai is, together with Deira, the other part of Dubai's historic city center. The two of them are separated by Dubai Creek, with Bur Dubai being West of it, while Deira is East. Currently the creek is being extended so that upon completion Bur Dubai will be an island. In the end the creek will be about 26 kilometers long - so, roughly, about twice as long as nature made it.
This is yet another case of the people of Dubai proving to the world that they are indeed able to form their land based on their ideas and fantasies. Of course, it is not only about the convenience of having a beautiful waterway going through the heart of Dubai - it is also of critical economic importance.
Port Rashid is also adjacent to Bur Dubai. This man-made harbour, that was only opened as recently as 1972, is now one of the biggest downtown ports in the world. It too is presently undergoing new developments: It is being transformed into a state-of-the-art cruise terminal. This is of great significance for the area, as Dubai's already huge popularity with cruising tourists is currently growing faster than ever before. Right next to the park, Dubai Maritime City is also being built at the moment. This will be a man-made multi-purpose peninsula - but especially for living, working - and shopping. Also it will be emphasizing research activities - most of which are going to be sea related.
