Deira
Deira is the old part of Dubai City. It is where the old fishing town used to be that so quickly turned into the shiny metropolis that Dubai is today. One could argue that Deira is Dubai's most "authentic" - and possibly most Arabic - part. There are many old houses left from the time when Dubai was just the capital of a relatively unknown Emirate. Its atmosphere is still as real as it was back then - being there, people are reminded of such places like Morocco or Egypt.
There is a creek that goes through Dubai. East of it, there is the area now known as downtown, and to its West, that is where you find Deira, which has a port on its side of the creek: Port Saeed, a little harbour mostly used for boats and small sport yachts.
Of course, the word "Deira" will soon take one an entirely new meaning. Currently the "Deira Palm" is under construction - that will be an artificial island of gigantic proportions, shaped like a palm tree. Its location is just off the Deira coastline.
Probably the most fascinating existent landmark in Deira is Deira City Centre, a shopping mall of amazing size. More than 340 stores sell their merchandise on 121 thousand square meters. Most of them are made for luxury taste only, that is true, but far from all are. After all, Deira is still surprisingly down-to-earth.
