Downtown

Downtown Dubai is a partially completed development area in Dubai that includes the Burj Dubai - the world's tallest building and also its tallest man-made structure - and that is so even though it is still under construction. (Its completion is expected for September 2009.)

Among all the many world records and amazing accomplishments Dubai dazzles the world with, the Burj Dubai is probably the most spectacular one. It is no less than 800 meters high. Compare that to the Tapei 101, currently the world's second highest building (and formerly, for a short time, its number one): That Taiwan-based building stands 500 meters tall - that is an unbelievable 300 meters less than the Burj Dubai!

As these numbers show you, the Burj is not only a new world record in height, it opens completely new dimensions and horizons in what humanity is capable of. This building is so stunning that it alone would be able to guarantee Dubai's bright future.

Now, about the location, it is important to clarify a potential misunderstanding: Downtown Dubai is indeed a new development area, set South-East of the city center - and that center, which confusingly sometimes has been called downtown as well, is also Dubai's historic core - hence it includes the traditional neighbourhoods of Deira and Bur - whereas the new Downtown is in fact completely new indeed.

Downtown Dubai will give residence and workplace to no less than 750 thousand people. So it is really a large city - within a huge city. Once it is completed, it is expected to actually turn into Dubai's new commercial city center. Thus it will be relieving the present one - and this is expected to have a highly positive effect on Dubai's traffic situation.

Downtown will be an appealing mixture of residences - high rises and villas - , offices and, of course, possibilities for shopping. And here's another world record: Part of the Burj Dubai complex is Dubai Mall - and it is indeed the largest shopping center in the whole world. Well, isn't that just what you would have expected...?
