Waterfront

The Dubai Waterfront, which is currently being built, is going to be the largest construction development ever made by man - it will be a group of large artificial islands, extending the waterfront of the city of Dubai. The islands will be forming a shape somewhat similar to that of a circle, but in fact it will look quite natural and certainly they will be the most authentic looking man-made islands of all the numerous Dubai projects. Nakheel Properties, the investor which owns 51 per cent of the development, still invites additional participants as the ongoing process is open to foreign investors. Arranging the project in such a manner has turned out to be a strikingly smart move.

Without the combined efforts of Dubai and the contributors from around the world, a development of this magnitude probably would not remotely have been possible.

Here is some technical data to give you an idea of the Waterfront's dimensions: Through it more than 70 kilometers will be added to the coastline of Dubai - and it will be able to house almost two million people. It cannot be denied - the world has never seen anything like this. And this is also true: The development has been criticized for interfering with the natural ecological system of the land and the sea.

However, the further the Waterfront proceeds, the more silent those critics seem to become, as the effects of the construction on the eco system, which can now increasingly be measured with scientific accuracy, have shown to be very much in harmony with nature - and even beneficial to it, when for example it comes to endangered marine species that seem to have found a safe heaven in the water between and around the gigantic man-made islands.

What will the Waterfront be like? One way to say it is that it will be the essence of Dubai. Again what is being built will be the most balanced combination of a living and a work environment, with a strong emphasis on recreation and culture.

Needless to say that the Waterfront will be completely international. Already English is by far the most common language spoken in the Arab Emirate of Dubai - but the Waterfront is expected to give Dubai, probably already the most international place in the world, a further boost towards becoming the inofficial capital of the world.
