Fujairah is one of the smaller member Emirates within the UAE - although its area is about two thirds that of Greater London, it only has a population of 130 thousand. Its terrain is entirely mountainous, and it is the only Emirate that is located on that country's East coast. Therefor its climate is very different than in all the other Emirates, which are mostly covered by desert: Fujairah has quite a lot of rainfall for a place on the Arab peninsula, and so people often call it the Green Arabia, due to its surprisingly lush vegetation. In that environment farmers can also grow quite a variety of crops.
Its tourism has not yet fulfilled its complete potential. Soon the construction of "Al Fujairah Paradise", a luxury coast resort, is set to begin. (And apparently its name, although striking, is well chosen!) Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, the ruler of Fujairah, intends to turn his complete Emirate into one big touristic hot spot. The location certainly meets all the physical requirements to reach that ambitious aim: Fujairah has especially beautiful sand beaches, with a fresh breeze, which makes the constant summer heat quite bearable and pleasant. In "Al Fujurah Paradise", there will be more than a thousand five-star villas as well as several international luxury hotels. Well - there is a reason why the UAE are called the country of world records...
Fujairah's economy is doing well. The financial crisis of 2008 did not hit the Emirate too hard. It has a thriving and cleverly managed free trade zone (similar to the one in Dubai), which has a very positive and stimulating effect on the whole of its economy. Although Fujairah is currently still one of the lesser known Emirates, its appears that soon it will be playing a more important role in the region - and the world.
