Sharjah

Sharjah is an Emirate and at the same time a city (the capital of the Emirate of the same name) known for its low density of cars - although at the same time it is a thriving business metropolis. The population of Sharjah the Emirate is 890 thousand, while Sharjah City has 801 thousand inhabitants - which means that almost the entire population lives in the capital. The area of Sharjah is about as big as Luxembourg, but, since almost all the people live clustered in the capital, the land around it is virtually devoid of people - which makes it perfect for adventure tourists. Altogether it is an amazing combination of the sea and the desert. Sharjah city is located on the coast, overlooking the Persian Golf.

Being the third-biggest member of the United Arab Emirates and a direct neighbour of Dubai, the country's shining mega-metropolis, Sharjah naturally plays an important role within the UAE. In fact, the real-estate boom that within a few decades transformed Dubai from a village in the desert into one of the major cities in the Islamic world, has also had great impact on Sharjah. While Dubai is a city that dazzles its visitors with its exuberance, Sharjah has managed to maintain a more quiet, and somewhat conservative, traditional atmosphere. Sharjah has an excellent transport system and a high level of ecological awareness.

Quality of life is seen as a major factor. Therefor the preferred way of dwelling is in high-class villas which avoid the flashy glitter of Dubai and therefor are still sold at reasonable prices.

The American University of Sharjah is a highly respected learning institution, being located in University City within Sharjah City. The school was founded in 1997. The term "American University" actually does make sense, because it (unlike so many others with a similar name!) cooperates closely with several US universities, especially with the renowned American University in Washington, DC.

The future of Sharjah is closely linked to that of the UAE as a whole. But although this is true, the Emirate still has its own cultural identity - it is in fact the Emirate with the longest history. And with its very diversified economy, Sharjah seems to be prepared for whatever the future may hold.
